Occupational Therapy
Samantha hits a head switch mounted to her wheelchair and plays her musical part in a school performance. Frankie turns on the microwave with a switch at his elbow, preparing a snack for classmates. Ashley now accesses her communication device more successfully since the screen has been repositioned. And Andrew turns on the TV in the residence, selecting his favorite program with a computer-assisted remote.
These students’ occupational therapists have worked with them to make these activities possible. The OT department provides a range of supports, interventions and adaptations that enable youngsters to maximize participation in their school program and in their various life roles as students, friends and family and community members.
OT staff work with students on activities of daily living, environmental control, functional vision, mobility, orthopedic status and need for orthotics. The OT department also assists with procurement of toileting and bathing equipment for home and school.
